Question 2. Define Physical Education.
Answer- It is a very difficult task to give any one definition of physical education. There have been continuous changes in the forms, functions and ideologies related to physical education. From ancient times till today, it has adopted a special physical education system according to the needs of the individual, society and the country. And in this era, the system has changed. This is the reason why different definitions of physical education have been given.
Charles A. According to Butcher, “Physical education is an integral part of the whole educational process and its aim in the field of enterprise is to develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially complete citizens through such physical activities that are selected keeping these objectives in mind.” From the above considerations about general education and physical education, it becomes clear that the objectives of both physical education and general education are not different from each other. Through general education, these objectives are achieved through lectures given in the classroom and through study, whereas in physical education, these objectives are achieved through physical activities.
General education is a knowledge that is related to the body. It modifies the structure, deformity and growth of the body and its means are physical activities. Different scholars have given different definitions about it, some of which are as follows-
D. According to Oberteufer, “Physical education is the sum of all the experiences that a person has through physical activity.
In the words of R. Cassidy, “Physical education is the sum of all the changes that come about in the person through activity.
J. B. Nash writes, “Physical education is that part of the whole field of education which is concerned with the responses of the large muscle functions.”
According to J. F. Williams, “Physical education is the sum of all the physical activities of the individual selected according to their diversity and used according to their purpose.”
According to Charles A. Butcher, “Physical education is an integral part of the whole process of education which aims to produce physically, mentally, emotionally and socially fit citizens. The place of physical activities has been chosen so that we can achieve this goal.”
According to J. R. Sherman, physical education is that part of education which modifies the conduct and manners of the individual through physical activities.”
According to H. C. Chak, “Physical education is that part of the general program of education which is concerned with the growth, development and education of children through physical activities. It is the complete education of children through physical activities. Physical activities are the means and their selection and use are made in such a way that their effect falls on every aspect of the child’s life, physical, mental, emotional and moral.”
According to C. C. Cowell, “Physical education is that change in the social behavior of the individual. Which is produced by the stimulation of the muscles and their associated large-scale activity!”
According to C. L. Brownell, physical education is the sum of the complete and balanced experiences which the individual receives from participating in multi-muscular processes and which enhance his development and growth to the maximum.”
According to the definition of the Central Advisory Board of Physical Education and Recreation of India, “Physical education is education itself. It is the education that is given for the complete personality of the child or for the complete development of body, mind and soul through his physical activities.”
After studying all the above definitions, the following things come to light-
Physical education is an integral part of education itself.
The medium of physical education is physical activities only.
The purpose of physical education is not only to make the body healthy and beautiful. It is an education system that can lead to the all-round development of man.
Today's physical education is planned and based on scientific principles.

Question 5. What is the importance of physical education? Give detailed information about it.
Answer- Importance of Physical Education
1. Curriculum of Physical Education – It has been accepted that physical education is a part of general education. Many qualities can be developed in a person through physical education, which are very important for national unity. Through the curriculum of physical education, tolerance, sociability, citizenship and a sense of respect for others can be taught in a person. No discrimination of any kind is kept in the activities of physical education, thus it plays a full part in establishing national unity.
2. No place for communalism in physical education – Physical education does not allow any kind of communalism to enter into it. Physical education does not accept discriminations of color, race, caste, religion etc. It has only the welfare of the entire human being as its objective. It does not tolerate such narrow views, which can lead to communal conflicts. Communalism is a huge threat to our country. Physical education increases national unity by removing this threat.
3. Inequality and Physical Education – Physical education does not accept any kind of inequality. Therefore, rich-poor, small-big, all are equal. All people are equal partners in the activities of physical education. Inequality is a huge problem in today's era. Physical education treats this problem and instills a sense of national unity in all human beings.
4. Provincialism and Physical Education – Provincialism has no importance in physical education. When a sportsperson does physical activity, he does not have any feeling that he is a resident of this province or that province. He has only one goal in front of him: human welfare. Everyone plays games together and respects each other's feelings. Therefore, unity increases among them and together they make the country more powerful and increase national unity.
5. Linguism and Physical Education – In a country where language conflict takes hold, national unity cannot last long. Many languages are spoken in India. In many areas, there are also fights in the name of language. Sometimes there is a dispute between Punjabi and Tamil, sometimes between Bengali and Oriya. It is difficult to understand the language of one place in another. But physical education does not accept any linguistic discrimination. Whether a player speaks Bengali or Punjabi, he considers every player as his brother. All the players come to the playground as a team and try to increase the glory of the country by interacting with each other. In this way, physical education tries to reduce linguistic differences and increase national unity.
6. Leisure time and Physical Education – Leisure time is when a person has nothing to do. Many people do not take any advantage of their leisure time, but at this time they get involved in useless disputes, arguments and fights, etc., which causes many problems in front of the country and they get caught up in many confusions. Sometimes these disputes increase so much that the unity of the country is also threatened. Physical education offers a very good program for making proper use of free time. In these programs, the free time of all children and youth is well utilized and their energy is directed in the right direction. In this way, the problem of national unity is solved.
7. Patriotism, Discipline and Tolerance – Through physical education, a sense of patriotism is created. Physical education develops a sense of patriotism in the youth and builds it well. Through N.C.C., A.C.C., Scouting, Girl Guiding and N.S.S., the youth are developed in a very beautiful way by giving physical education, while the feeling of patriotism and love for the country is also created in them. From the playground, the players also learn the qualities of discipline and duty and increase their sense of tolerance. Physical education gives maximum importance to these qualities and guides the youth properly and teaches them the way to increase national unity.
8. National Character and Physical Education – Physical education plays a very big role in awakening the feeling of national unity among the people and building national character in them. If there is a lack of national character among the people of the country, then no work of the country can run properly and the country cannot make any progress. Physical education programs are designed in such a way that along with the feeling of patriotism and respect for the country, national character is built in the youth. This national character plays a huge role in maintaining national unity. Without this, national unity cannot last for long. Physical education maintains this unity forever through national character.
